We went shopping this Friday, and found that Sainsbury's has removed free carrier bags from all of its checkouts "to encourage its customers to re-use bags".
The checkout cashier always asks me if I need help packing, It takes me a long time to get used to this question. Now she has another question, asking me if I need any free bags.
Customers can still ask single-use free bags, but are encouraged to re-use their bags by rewarding extra loyalty points through the Nectar card scheme, one point for one bag. But the checkout lady seems always to be confused by my large Debenhams' shopping bag, because different checkout lady rewards me different numbers of points, from 0 to 9 points.
